SQL 2008 Spatial Data - Geography and Geometry Data Types

by Ross Buggins 8. August 2009 15:06

SQL 2008 has brought us many great new features: integration with LINQ, the Entity Framework and Entity Data Model, the much needed DateTime2, but my top favourite is the spatial data support with the arrival of the Geography and Geometry data types.

Spatial information can bring a whole new dimension to an applications and how we think about that location data.  Up until now dealing with true spatial data has been something only for the GIS (Geography Information System) specialists, but now its sitting there ready for all of us to use.  The big bonus with the SQL 2008 spatial data types is the fact that they utilise the ability of the SQL engine to handle .NET CLR datatypes.  This means that the SQL spatial data types can not only be used in T-SQL queries, but they also neatly fit directly into our .NET code!

In this post I'm going to look at using the spatial data types in these two different scenarios and compare how they fight it out in terms of performance.  The OGC (Open Geospatial Consortium) define a number of standard meothds for working with spatial information, and thankfully, it looks like MS have actually stuck to implementing these as they are (although it hasn't stopped them adding in a few 'bonus methods'....)  The OGC methods can be found here and the additional methods are here.  A complete overview of the OGC standards is at the open geospatial site.

More to follow...

Expertise at Shore Tech Systems

by Ross Buggins 31. July 2009 20:27

Data Acquisition

With continual growth in the quantity of data being stored by organisations, there is an ever growing demand to centralise the structure of these data repositories. Shore Tech Systems have expertise in harvesting data from crawling both the public World Wide Web and internally within a business. With ever increasing network and processing speeds now is the obvious time to find out how gathering data could open up new benefits to you.

Web Services

Connecting your future business IT requirements together with defined Web Services will provide you with the flexibility and assurances far above the expected. Seamless integration within your organisation and externally will allow you to drive forward to deliver new systems with ease. With the worry of connectivity removed from the equation you can focus on what is really important to your future.

Data Mining

Identifying patterns within your data allows for a transformation into usable business information and knowledge. With the power of knowledge an organisation can determine the current positives and also the negatives, allowing for thorough scrutinisation and discovery of new ways to move forward. As more data becomes available to mine the accuracy of the information exposed can only increase.

Web Applications

A web application is more than just a web site. The two terms are often used interchangeably but the demand for web applications with new functionality continues to push the boundaries of Web 2.0 to new limits. Exploited properly, Web Applications will create an effective, and more importantly, unique, application and open a worldwide gateway into your business.

Distributed processing

When business procedures or complex algorithms would take too long to process with a conventional infrastructure design, a distributed system may allow for the performance increase that is needed. The overall run time can be significantly reduced by dividing a complete problem domain into discrete tasks that are able to run in parallel.

Mobile Platforms

Mobile devices are a natural extension to your current business platform. By empowering employees and customers with the ability to access your services from mobile devices you widen your business reach. Many mobile software applications are enhanced through the use of Location Based Services and SMS gateways to allow for a ubiquitous experience with existing technology and exploiting the user’s surroundings.

Case Study - System Management

by Ross Buggins 31. July 2009 20:04

The new administration system provides a consolidation of usage statistics from the existing business system along with email notifications and a reporting service. The system allows for management of the hosting of the business system physical servers and allows for monitoring of system the outlined resources all from the same central web application:

  • System usage monitoring
  • System Performance monitoring
  • Web based event logging
  • Email notifications
  • Web Service administration
  • Web based SQL Server administration
  • Web based IIS management
    • Creating / Deleting / Stopping / Starting Application pools and Web Sites

We are an IT Consulting Partnership based in the City of Norwich, Norfolk, UK. Since being founded in 2007 by Ross Buggins and John Healy, Shore Tech Systems has moved from strength to strength. Together, our diverse skill sets have created a Partnership that allows us to offer something extra to our clients.

We have shared our experiences and provided our services to a complete range of clients from Educational Institutes, SME’s, Government Agencies to Self Employed persons. This experience allows us to be ready to understand your unique requirements and move your business forward.

Ross Buggins

Continuing his education reading Computer System Engineering (BSc) at the Computer Sciences School of the University of East Anglia he twice received the Dean's award for distinguished performance; he then received commercial and University sponsored funding to continue research which he had started as an undergraduate. From this, the natural progression was to move to IT Consultancy full time and he believes mobile applications fully utilising location awareness is where the future will be.

John Healy

Whilst reading Molecular biology at the University Of Essex his interest in computers was sparked when using them heavily for cell imaging and analysis. Upon completion he turned his attention full time to pursuing further education into Computer Science, which he read at the University Of East Anglia, attaining awards from the IET and BCS. His interests focus heavily on user interaction and accessibility upon the web.

Case Study - Distributed Processing System and Web Service Integration

by Ross Buggins 31. July 2009 19:32

Sys Consulting Limited turned to Shore Tech Systems to integrate a specialist signal processing library with a public web site. This project had a number of large hurdles to overcome:

  • The signal processing was computationally expensive
  • The processing times during development were too high for public use
  • The processing solutions had to be consumed by existing web sites whilst being maintained and operated independently
  • The signal processing algorithms were implemented in MatLab
  • The MatLab algorithms must be secure and not distributed to 3rd parties
